This page reflects suggested changes, additions and comments received since the proposal to utilize as a beginning software classification system the taxonomy developed by IDC.
An overall question is how detailed the classification system needs to be. The IDC basically has four levels of hierarchy, and it may be adequate for OpenBRR to use only three. Additionally, several new types of software have been suggested (Frameworks in general, Hibernate, others) that do not fall into the scheme. Additionally, the referenced document has several "emerging" areas, and a decision is needed whether to keep these areas separate or fold them into the system (an advantage to keeping new, emerging fields distinct is that they are areas of high interest, but would not yet be candidates for OpenBRR ratings). Open Source software packages that do not fit within the structure below are solicited, with any suggested nomenclature and category terms to define them.
